Ten steps to interview heaven

Ten steps to interview heaven

Getting the perfect job usually means having to go for an interview. The trouble is, going for an interview is never easy. It can be a stressful, nerve-racking experience. And if you let the worry get to you, you could end up making the wrong impression and failing to secure the job.

But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Follow our ten steps to interview heaven and you might find that there is a light at the end of the interview tunnel. Try them next time you go for an interview. You’ll be surprised what a difference it will make.

  1. If you do nothing else, be on time. If you’re late your interviewer will notice you – for all the wrong reasons. Try doing a dummy run the day before to make sure you know where you’re going.
  2. Do your homework. Research the company and its products and services. Make sure you know how to pronounce the company’s name. It’s page one stuff we know, but it still matters.
  3. Try to relax - be yourself. The interviewer wants to see who you are. They are on your side because they want to find good people for their job. So don’t worry. If you can be your professional best and view every interview as an adventure you’re on to a winner. And you never know, you might learn something too.
  4. Smile and be friendly. An interview is not the time to be shy. A warm smile goes a long way toward establishing a good first impression and rapport with the interviewer.
  5. Look ‘em in the eye – and shake properly. A limp handshake or lack of eye contact can make you appear ill-at-ease and possibly less than honest. Relax, be confident!
  6. Bring copies of your CV and examples of work. Interviewers don't always have a copy of your resume available and you will seem ultra-prepared if you have spares. If it is relevant, a leather portfolio containing samples of your work can leave a good impression.
  7. Look the part. How does the adage go? Dress for the job you want not the job you have? Absolutely right. That way your potential employer will be able to visualise you in the role more easily. Good grooming is vital and, even if you know the office is typically business casual, a well-fitting suit makes an excellent first impression.
  8. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Make sure you have prepared a few questions in advance. Typically, interviewers gauge your interest in the position by whether you ask questions.
  9. Bring a planner or pad of paper and a pen. This way, you can take notes or even write down your questions if you tend to get nervous.
  10. Say thanks, however it went. Make sure you get a business card from every person who interviews you. Send a handwritten note to each one – but make sure you spell their names correctly. Not many people write thank you notes but it creates a great impression.
